Are you looking for beautiful gardens in Rotterdam? The Trompenburg Botanical Gardens is located in Kralingen and it’s the perfect place for relaxation, a cup of tea and a beautiful place to get lost in! Find yourself lost along the pretty paths next to the roses, wisterias, rododendrons and more!
The botanical gardens have events throughout the year that you can join and visit, but I decided on my day off to visit on a Friday morning, taking my camera along to practice my photography skills. It was very welcoming to the gardens, like stepping into another little world away from the big city life in Rotterdam.
Botanical Cacti House
The cactuses here are mostly from North and South America, with a few from Africa too. They have a beautiful large greenhouse that has a cute little walkway to view all the cactuses close by. I love how they are all rather unique, with some blooming and others growing so tall they are reaching the ceiling.
Rododendrons
The park in Spring has more than 700 different types of Rododendrons. With the plants starting to bloom in February, these beautiful flowers can be shown in full glory in May. I can imagine that people travel from far especially to this botanical garden just to see all these.
Wisterias In Bloom
When visiting in May I was lucky to visit during the pretty bloom of the wisterias. These gorgeous flowers are found in drooping clusters with colours of lilac or bluish-purple. Next to these beautiful flowers there is a seating area and a little pond with tortoises, which I funnily enough thought was fake at first as they were chilling in the sunshine!
Rest Of The Park
Within the rest of the park, there are of course many other plants, flowers and trees to view. You may even be able to spot a few of the brightly orange Koi fish swimming.

It is very easy to reach from Rotterdam Central with a bike ride through the city, or you can choose either tram 24 or 21 that heads towards the end stop ‘De Esch’, getting off at ‘Woudestein’. They are open nearly all year round and is accessible to all ages and disabilities. You can check the current opening times and prices on their website.
Tips:
- Take your time to enjoy the beauty of what flowers, trees and cacti are kept here
- Treat yourself to a piece of cake at the cafe
- Bring a friend – the perfect place for a catch up together

4th July 2018 at 2:00 pmIsn’t it gorgeous that bridge!? I could of spent longer there, but I know I’ll already be going back for each season of the year. They have some fantastic gardners keeping it all pretty and perfect!

30th June 2018 at 2:23 pmI have not been to Trompenberg, but I love botanical gardens. I’m lucky enough to live a 2-minute walk from one of the top botanical gardens in Canada. It’s always a delight to explore and photograph. Your photos are wonderful. I love the cacti shots and the wisteria.

4th July 2018 at 2:01 pmThank you for commenting Nancie. What a dream to live near one! I have never been to Canada but I would definitely add more botanical gardens to my list to explore. I think they are beautiful no matter what season, but I was lucky to visit in Spring for those gorgeous wisteria flowers!

4th July 2018 at 2:03 pmCompletely agree Josie! I have definitely been making more time to also visit botanical gardens during travelling. Big cities are amazing but its the little gardens and peaceful areas that really help you take it all in 🙂
