Snow In Luxembourg: Winter Fun!

snowy trees

Luxembourg is not the first place you think of when searching for snow locations, but snow in Luxembourg is definitely a possibility! The best time of course is during winter, which for Luxembourg is around the Christmas period. If you find yourself in Luxembourg during winter, be ready to wrap up warm and travel to the northern part for higher altitude and better snow.

Winter Snow In Luxembourg

For the end of December 2020 and begin of January 2021 the snow arrived in Luxembourg and here below are the photos I took. The average temperature was about 1°C degree to -3°C degrees for the whole day, which helped settle the snow in the northern region of Oesling.

However the capital city for this period experienced more rain, which didn’t help the snow settling for more than a few hours. So I didn’t get a chance to visit the center for any photos – but I will update* this post if I ever do!

*Update – 2 weeks later it did snow beautifully in the City of Luxembourg!! You can see our beautiful photos for winter inspiration on this latest Snow In Luxembourg City blogpost.

Bourscheid Castle & Area

The Bourscheid Castle can be found not far north from Ettelbruck. This beautiful place also became covered in a blanket of snow during January 2021. We explored by car and foot to the Gringlay Vista Point and surrounding area in the snow.

Where To Have Fun

For taking the kids out to play, to make a huge snowman or to go sledging down some hills, the best place seems to be also in the Oesling / Éisleck region. This is simply due to the higher altitude (meaning more snow too!). The Oesling / Éisleck region has an elevation of more than 300meters. With many fields and areas very hilly, allowing fun fast playtime with your sledge!

Some fun places that you could visit for the fun reasons above are:

  • Grosbus
  • Tandel
  • Rindschleiden (lots of hills for sledging!)
  • Weiswampach

FYI keep in mind that driving in Luxembourg during winter means your car should also have winter tyres.
