Route 66 from Page, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada

Staying in Page, Arizona was the perfect place during our 2 week US road trip itinerary to stop for 2 nights to visit the must see attractions within the area. Situated next to the Colorado river, Monument Valley and Glen Canyon Dam, we were able to visit Horseshoe Bend and even took a longer drive to hike at Zion National Park for the day. Page is located on route 89, which we followed during our Scenic Route 89A through the Vermillion Cliffs and Navajo Bridge. But for our trip, we headed south to Route 66 for the next step in our American adventure!

Seeking the Meteor Crater, Arizona

Unknown to many, northern Arizona is home to a meteor crater near Route 66. Just off the Interstate 40, east of Flagstaff and west of Winslow, you can visit the protected meteorite impact crater that was created about 50,000 years ago. Formally known as the Canyon Diablo Crater, it is not protected as a national monument as it is still privately owned by Barringer Crater Company. This geological site is well worth a stop on your road trip vacation through America as you will be amazed by the sheer size of it and history.

Called by scientists as the Barringer Crater in honor of Daniel Barringer, who was first to suggest that it was produced by meteorite impact.

Hiking the Upper Antelope Canyons Navajo Tour, Arizona

The Antelope Canyons can be found on Navajo land east of Page, Arizona. The only way you can visit is by booking a tour to visit either the Upper Canyons or the Lower Canyons, both formed by erosion and flash flooding.  Both are slightly different, so take a look at the differences of each one and the requirements before booking. If you are planning to go here, make sure you book your tickets in advance too. We had chosen the Upper Canyons to visit, and luckily we could book the last space on the tour for September – which we actually booked at least 3 months before we were even in America for our US road trip! Hiking to Horseshoe Bend, AZ

The Horseshoe Bend, located only 6.4km from Page and 8km from Lake Powell, can be easily reached with a car on your US travels through Arizona. The beautiful curve of the Colorado River can be seen after you hike from the carpark through the recycled sand, which is protecting the Navajo Sandstone. You will see the incredible Horseshoe Bend from above. At the top of this hike, you are basically standing in the crossroads of Page, Lake Powell, Glen Canyon and Vermillion Cliffs. By car is the best option to travel here, but there has been an increase in tours too.
