On 14th May 1940 German forces invaded Rotterdam in a bid to take the city over. Situated on each side of the river Maas, they fought the Dutch military defences under demands of Hitler during World War Two. The actual bombings started during the negotiation process between the Dutch and Germans, destorying the heart of the city with a massive air raid. These bombings could of been stopped if the message had been brought over on time. The entire historic city centre was destroyed with up to 900 persons killed and 85,000 people becoming homeless. When it snows, many cities come to a standstill and are not prepared no matter how much salt they spread on the roads. Rotterdam is usually prepared as much as they can, with trams and trains trying their best to keep on time. But thats okay if there are some delays as the city of Rotterdam become a beautiful snowy paradise! The climate turns to freezing point, needing to dig out your winter coat, gloves and scarf. I love these type of snow forecasts, specially if I’m free from work too! Continue reading “Snow In Rotterdam – December 2017”
Delft is one of my favourite cities in the Netherlands (even though I don’t visit very often), as it always looks so cosy and old fashioned but has all the shopping and food choices that you need.
Back when I still didn’t live in the Netherlands permanently, we had taken a day trip to Delft to explore and the Nieuwe Kerk was on our list of things to see. However even after a few years it is still a treat to see when in Delft, standing tall on the market square.
No matter what the weather brings, the Kralingse Bos is a beautiful place for a walk just outside of the city of Rotterdam. You can visit the park for the nature or to pop for lunch to one of the many restaurants. The lake is a popular place to swim (when suitable) as well as spotting the small sailing boats. It’s easily reachable by car, cycling, walking or a nearby tram.
This post is to share photos of the four seasons from my experience.
