For 2019 the theme of the Wereld Haven Dagen / World Port Days was Mariteam. As always, they provided the public with some amazing demonstrations on the water, such as the one we visited this year. The rain held off and we were able to sit and enjoy the demonstrations on the water. Here is a quick photoblog of the World Port Days event for 2019.
Royal Navy Demonstration During World Port Days
The main World Port Days demonstration we wanted to see for 2019 was the Royal Navy freeing a ship from pirates and how drug traffickers in the Caribbean are intercepted in daily life. These demonstrations are taken place right next to the Rotterdam cruise terminal and Erasmusbrug, perfect location to watch from the waters edge.
The military helicopter taking part is the NH90 combat helicopter. This helicopter model has been in use since 1995 and in service from 2007, primarily for the Italian, German and French Armed Forces. For the Royal Netherlands Navy, they have used this type of helicopter to fight piracy in the Gulf of Aden and support Operation Atalanta in Somalia.
We always try to see something different each year during the event in Rotterdam. Last year we booked a Helicopter Excursion above Rotterdam which was fantastic. We also checked out some of the boats along the edge, which are all free to visit!
This World Port Days event is brilliant for all ages, whether it’s getting the out to see the local trucks and cars of the military and fire services, to exploring the many interesting boats and fun activities along the water’s edge.
On Saturday the festival also has a firework show, which we watched from a distance this year!
